    适用范围:This document specifies procedures and requirements for the detection and classification of localized overheating on ground surfaces by chemical etch methods. The process described in this document is typically used on ground surfaces; however, it is also useful for the detection of surface anomalies that result from post-heat treatment machining such as hard turning, milling and edge breaking (deburring) processes. Surface metallurgical anomalies caused by carburization or decarburization are also readily detectable with this process. Some methods which have been used in the past are no longer recommended. Specifications are intended to be changed to use the methods in this document. These etching methods are more sensitive to changes in surface hardness than most hardness testing methods. This document applies to steel parts such as gears, shafts, splines and bearings. It is not applicable to nitrided parts and stainless steels. NOTE This process, although at times called "nital etch", is not intended to be confused with other processes also known as "nital etch". The surface temper etch procedure is performed after grinding and before additional finishing operations such as superfinishing, shot peening and honing.

The calculation methods of ISO and AGMA assume that theload per unit of length is equal to the total load divided by thelength of contact. In this paper, the load sharing along the lineof contact is determined from the hypothesis of minimum elasticpotential. From this nonuniform load distribution and Hertz'sequation, a method for determining both the value and the locationof the critical contact stress is described.

The measurementdecomposition method, developed jointly by National Institute ofStandards and Technology (NIST) and Oak Ridge Metrology Center(ORMC) personnel, is used to determine the uncertainty of eachcomponent of the measurement task. Once quantified, thesecomponents are added in quadrature according to NIST Technical Note1297, 1994 Edition. Verification of this method can be accomplishedby inter-comparisons with other methods and laboratories. Thetechniques developed at NIST and ORMC utilize a CMM with a rotarytable, a FORTRAN program for involute data generation, and aProEngineer solid model for gear visualization.

    适用范围:Heat treatment causes distortion of gear tooth geometry. Toimprove tooth quality, particularly after carburizing andhardening, gears are generally ground. For low distortion, stockremoval is small up to a maximum of 0.005 inch from each toothflank. This allows minimum surface hardness reduction with nopossible detrimental effect on gear pitting life. Uncontrolleddistortion, on the other hand, results in an undue amount of stockremoval with a significant loss of tooth surface hardness. Lowersurface hardness accelerates contact-stress-induced tooth pittingthat reduces gear life. For heavily distoeed gears, the pittinglife may be reduced as much as 30 percent after grinding. For arealistic evaluation of the pitting life of ground, carburized andhardened gears with uncontrolled distortion, derating factors arenecessary and established for a number of gear materials.

    适用范围:The shot peening process is frequently utilized in order toinduce compressive residual stresses onbelow a surface, which willremarkably improve the bending fatigue strength of a gear tooth. inthis study, two kinds of case-hardened steels, namely thecarburized and the carbo-nitrided steels were used. First, bendingfatigue strength using a notched plate simulating a gear tooth wasinvestigated. As expected, the bending fatigue strengths of twokinds of case-hardened steels are improved by the shot peeningprocess. If the shot peening process is employed in order toimprove the bending fatigue strength of a gear tooth, the surfacedurability of the shot peened surface may be reduced because ofdegradation of its surface roughness. On the contrary, it isexpected that the surface durability may be improved by compressiveresidual stresses induced by shot peening. To understand thesefactors, the surface durability of the shot peened or/an barrelledcase- hardened steel rollers was investigated using a two rollercontact fatigue testing machine.

For these cases the methods descriied in literature fordetermining the AGMA J-factor are not suitable. This paper presentsthe condition for tangency at the involute and a method todetermine the J factor under this condition.

    适用范围:Industry demands for higher power density gearboxes to improveproduct performance require utilization of the load carryingcapability of every inch of available face width. As a result, loaddistributions and the resulting root stresses are of considerableimportance. Current analytical methods include three dimensionalfinite element analysis (FEA) and combinations of Wellauer andSeireg's moment image method with two dimensional boundary elementanalysis or beam bending formulas. Three dimensional FEA, althoughreliable, is time consuming and of great expense in comparison tothe use of classical techniques and approximations. In helicalgears these approximations give reasonable estimates of root stressdistributions along the face width but lack the accuracy to designto engineering limits. Based upon finite element and experimental results, adiscrepancy in the approximate methods is the stiffness change inthe normal plane associated with the ends of helical gear teeth.Tooth stiffness is lower at the acute edge, where the normal forceassociated with tooth contact protrudes beyond the transverse edgeof the gearon the back side of the tooth. The opposite resultoccurs at the obtuse edge, where the normal force is not producingbeyond the transverse edge of the tooth. Analytical and experimental studies for a limited number ofcases have been completed. The experimental results are used toverify the simplified three dimensional FEAparametric study on theeffect of helix angle. The parametric study results, whencompleted, will be used to determine a root stress correctionfactor. The focus of this paper is on the initial parametricresults and experimental studies, with an introduction to possiblecorrection techniques. The correction factors are currently beingresearched and will be the topic of future publications.

Thirty-two combinations were studied in total. Thegears were modeled using the hybrid finite element computationalmethod Contact Analysis Programming Package (CAPP), of AdvancedNumerical Solutions. The results of this analysis suggest that fora given level of face contact ratio, an advantage in bending andcompressive stress exists at the mP=2.1 level over all of theothers considered. Increasing both mP and mF had the effect ofsmoothing out the bending and compressive stresses when viewed as afunction of roll angle.

Turbo-generator gearunit testing shows that these low frequency vibrations may occureven when the rotating components are balanced precisely. In starepicyclic gearboxes of Stoeckicht design, splined couplings betweenthe ring gears and output shaft are used to float the ring gearsfor load sharing. The sub-synchronous vibrations that arise fromsuch components are transmitted along with the mesh frequencyvibrations to the turbine rotor bearings. When the amplitude levelsof these vibrations and their harmonics exceed a certain limit, thelife of these bearings is significantly reduced. To reduce thevibrations from the dynamic eccentricity of ring gears and splinedcouplings the design is changed.
